Performance Enhancements and Operator-Centric Efficiency
This system delivers consistent solids removal performance critical for maintaining drilling fluid quality and reducing abrasive wear on tbm tunnel equipment. Designed for ease of maintenance and straightforward operation, it supports frequent cleaning cycles and integration with optional desilting stages for enhanced fluid purity. The system’s vibration strength is tightly controlled for structural longevity, while the broad treating capacity range accommodates a variety of drilling site demands. These operational advantages translate into measurable ROI through lower mud consumption, reduced equipment downtime, and adherence to industry environmental standards favored by global tbm manufacturers.

Desanders for trenchless horizontal directional drilling (HDD) separate solids, such as sand and other abrasive particles, from the drilling fluid, or "mud". This process allows for the recycling of drilling mud, which reduces costs and minimizes environmental impact.

How desanders for HDD work
A typical HDD mud recycling process involves a series of steps to clean the slurry, and a desander is a critical part of this multi-stage separation.

  1. Initial screening: Used drilling fluid from the borehole is first sent to a shale shaker. This device uses high G-force vibrations and layered screens to remove the largest solids, like rocks and large cuttings.
  2. Desanding: A centrifugal pump transfers the screened fluid to the desander's hydrocyclone cone(s). The slurry is pumped into the wide upper section of the cone at a tangent, creating a strong circular motion.
  3. Cyclonic separation: The centrifugal force throws heavier solid particles against the walls of the cone. These solids spiral downward and exit from the bottom.
  4. Recycling: The cleaner, lighter fluid travels up through the center of the cone and exits through an outlet at the top. This clean fluid is then ready for reuse.
  5. Desilting (optional): For finer solids separation, the fluid from the desander can be sent through a desilter, which uses smaller hydrocyclone cones to remove even smaller particles.

Use Scenarios

Slurry Cleaning in Trenchless Horizontal Directional Drilling Operations
In demanding HDD environments, the Slurry Mud Desander System acts as a crucial solid-liquid separation unit that maintains drilling fluid consistency by extracting sand and abrasive particles. Positioned within multi-stage slurry treatment lines, it assures that recycled mud meets strict quality requirements to protect drilling tools and tbm machine components. Its cyclonic separators efficiently handle varying flow rates and solids loads common in directional drilling trenches. Integration with downstream desilters and mud cleaners enables compliance with environmental discharge regulations and contributes to minimizing fluid loss and operational expenses.

Enhancing Mud Treatment Efficiency in Tunnel Boring Projects
This desander system is instrumental in tunnel boring projects where continuous recycling of drilling mud is essential for uninterrupted tunnel excavation. It serves as an upstream solids remover, extracting coarse and fine particles that otherwise cause mechanical degradation in tbm machines. Its design supports modular installation within existing slurry treatment plants managed by tbm suppliers, facilitating smooth workflow integration and real-time mud quality control. Through reliable centrifugal pump operation and cyclone sizing, the system ensures optimized mud conditioning tailored to the demanding solids control challenges characteristic of tunnel environments.
